So, is Oblivion a remake or a remaster?
And does it matter?
To answer these questions, I am making the foolish mistake of litigating the definitions of these terms.
Spoiler if you somehow missed the title: the answers are yes, and… maybe?
Again, Im being foolish.
It has the same title and the same general story.
Think last yearsUntil Dawnand 2023sDead SpaceandResident Evil 4.
Capcomeven admitted it was basically a remake.
Going off this entirely vibes-based definition, god damn it, yes, Oblivion Remastered is a remake.
Ugly is funny and always will be.
It evenbrought over a well-known voice acting mistake from the original.
Bethesda itself argues, We looked at every part and carefully upgraded it.
Its still a game from a previous era and should feel like one.
Essentially, if it doesnt feel current-gen, its a remaster, not a remake.
But nobody wanted that from an Oblivion remake.
Remakes can be faithful to the spirit of the OG and still be remakes.
Its all marketing lingo, anyway, terms meant to signal something to a player without actually promising anything.
But Oblivion Remastered is underselling itself.
