With the premiere ofThe Last of Us second season has come a fresh wave of criticism.

All of The Last of Us three main women characters are, actually.

Im not saying that short women cant look mature, but it certainly doesnt help.

Ellie and Abby in The Last of Us

Ramsey and Merced play up the youthfulness of their characters, but in a way that feels almost bratty.

Ramseys Ellie seems angrier, more like a rebellious teen than a reasonably angry young adult.

Ellie screams into the mountains about her immunity despite Tommys pleas for her to be quiet.

Joel Miller from The Last Of Us split game and TV show.

She seems incapable of self-control, pinning her sparring partner in a painful position even after he taps out.

This is further perpetuated within Ellie and Dinas dynamic.

What Do Less Mature Characters Bring To The Story?

Ellie from the HBO TV show and the video game The Last Of Us.

HBOs characters feel precocious, incapable of taking anything seriously.

I dont think its necessarily an inherentlybadchoice.

And making these characters more immature at the outset of the season could make their arcs hit harder.

Ellie and Dina slow dancing in HBO’s The Last of Us.

We could see themes of innocence lost and violence forcing children to grow up too fast.

What remains to be seen is if that story will be better or worse for its changes.

Ellie and Dina dancer in The Last of Us

Ellie and Dina sit together in The Last of Us Season 2.
